Lesson 2: Is Social Media Management a Good Career Choice For You?

Do you:
1.
Love people, enjoy interacting with them, and are comfortable doing so online? This is a career that’s all about connecting with people. Haters need not apply.
2.
Have at least a basic familiarity and can use social media with ease? You don’t have to be an expert on every single feature for every social network just yet, but if this is the first you’ve heard of Twitter or you have less than 30 friends on Facebook, this may not be the career for you.
3.
Have desire and motivation to build your own business? Whether you formally build your own business or work for a digital marketing or reputation monitoring agency, you should treat yourself as your own business. You are building a brand for yourself that you will carry with you throughout your career. Nothing you do on the internet is erasable so you must be thoughtful about everything you post. We recommend reading this book by Reid Hoffman (founder of Linkedin) to get you into the right mindset.
4.
Carry a passion for helping independent businesses succeed, especially smaller businesses that are the backbone of the economy? This could include a Mom and Pop coffee shop, a hair salon on main street, or even a franchisee of Subway. These are people you will interact with on a daily basis. You should feel passionate about helping them improve their business.
5.
Have access to the internet? This goes without saying…
6.
Own a smartphone with a data plan so you can work on the go? Social media is a fast moving arena and if you can’t react in real time, you can’t serve your clients effectively.
7.
Have a willingness and curiosity to learn more about social media, content creation and business? Working in social media requires continuous learning. The landscape change frequently opening up new opportunities and changing existing ones. You should be comfortable with this dynamic to enjoy working in social media.
